A day at the races with George*

With Royal Ascot now in full swing all bets are on, in both the race and style stakes.

Invariably we will be inundated with images of the weird and wonderful outfit choices on show. It seems that people take aim for the perfect outfit and then miss by a mile.



The pressure to pull off the perfect outfit is intense and it can put you in a tailspin. It can also send your bank account into a weeping mess if you try to solve the issue by throwing money at it. Money does not equal taste my good friends, which is why you should focus on one thing: keeping it simple.

A good, classic outfit does not need to cost the earth, it just needs to look like it does.

The key is to look at the cut. Something simple that has a wink of skin. Remember the golden rule: Legs or boobs – never both.

When at the races I would recommend keeping a decent length……nobody needs to see your Spanx when you bend over or sit down.

Stick to trustworthy block colour with a splash of patterns if full on patterns feel like too much of an enemy.

Aim for classic, elegant, and channel the era of good taste.

I tend to think that if you feel elegant you will behave elegantly. Emulate Audrey Hepburn at the races rather than Eliza Dolittle.

This outfit? It’s from George at Asda. The Dress, the scarf, the sunglasses, the bag. In total this outfit, minus shoes and jewellery, cost just £37.

The dress is incredibly comfortable and even better; it doesn’t ride up when you walk more than a foot. The sunglasses are UV40 and are dark enough to hold back the sun but not so dark that you have to keep lifting them off to see your race ticket. The bag was the nicest surprise for me, it holds a nice structure and doesn’t cave in on itself. It also has enough space in it to hide a pair of shoes in case your heels dig into the grass too much.
