Brooks Guest House, Bristol

A few Sunday's ago saw me bundling into a work pool car and setting off on a road trip with work. The occasional convention is part of my day job so I found myself leaving the 'shire and Bristol bound for a few days.

Three hours and a short period of driving around the same four roads feeling a little lost later I arrived with a colleague at the door of Brooks Guest house.

One of the many downsides to staying away with work is having to take part in the great game of hotel roulette. Nine times out of ten you end up with a pretty standard, large scale chain which ticks all of the clean and perfectly comfortable boxes. Unfortunately that leaves that one time out of ten to go to the extreme. Luckily for us our extreme went the right way.

It took a few minutes for us to find Brooks as it's tucked up a pedestrian street but once we found it we knew we were onto a winner. For a start it was right next door to the St Nicholas market full to the brim with food stalls and we all know how much I love food.

Walking into the forecourt you find yourself surrounded by tables, a barbecue and a little slice of Bristol's famous street art.

If you look up you will see one of the guest house's USPs: vintage American style campers on the roof. Glamping to the extreme.

Due to heading straight to the exhibition centre to set up we arrived at the hotel quite late leaving us exhausted and with only one thing in mind; food. We stopped by a local Slug and Lettuce to take advantage of the 2 for 1 cocktails and their WiFi to find a good place to eat. We found the Raj Indian restaurant just around the corner headed there for food (a brilliant hidden gem of the city and if I'm ever in the area again I will be back to review it for you....it is worth a visit) before collapsing into the giant marshmallow-y beds at the guest house with only thoughts of a good nights sleep and breakfast.

Woken in the morning by the reassuring sound of seagulls and the dulcet tones of a hungry tum, I fought with the monster in the duvet to get out of what may possibly be the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in an headed out for breakfast.

My favourite thing about staying in a hotel is without a doubt breakfast. I love a good hotel breakfast and genuinely believe that they are unrivalled - if they are done right.

Breakfast at Brooks Guest house is done very right indeed. A full menu of different cooked options including full English and eggs Benedict is matched with a weekly specials board and a continental buffet full of cereals, fruit and pastries.

Being in company that isn't someone who understands how much I love a good breakfast I restrained myself to a yoghurt with granola and sour dough bread with scrambled egg and bacon. I failed to get a picture of my eggs (bad blogger) because I was too eager, but I can report with confidence that they were damn good.

Staying at Brooks Guest house made a boring work trip turn into something really quite enjoyable. A sure sign of a good hotel.

Sadly I didn't get much time to explore the city but I'm determined to head back to Bristol with Mr M in tow for a bit more of an explore and when we go we will be staying here. It is perfectly located right by the banks of the Avon river and in the heart of a strong food scene. Always a strong selling point for me.
